Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
