A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
