A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
